Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week has a strong commitment to the local community and engaged various constituencies to execute new initiatives for the Spring 2012 season. Among them, the Lincoln Square BID, serving to enhance area businesses in the surrounding area, in conjunction with Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week welcomed the Fashion Plate and Crew Cuts promotions to support local restaurants. As well, young adults participating in New York City’s Young Adult Internship Program, an initiative designed to supply short-term, publically subsidized internships and work readiness training, provided interns who were on hand in the lead-up, as well as through the event in integral areas in the production of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Similarly, IMG Fashion expanded its partnership with the New York City Housing Authority that was launched in February. Through the coordination with event vendors and the City of New York, IMG was able to offer employment opportunities to public housing residents over the course of the event and was able to expand this program to more NYCHA residents this season.
In partnership with Fordham University and the City of New York, IMG Fashion commissioned an economic impact study designed to measure and analyze the impact of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week on restaurants, hotels and shops in the Lincoln Square area. The study was created and executed this summer by students at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Business. Among other things, the students found an estimated $40 million of economic impact generated annually by the event for businesses located in the five to ten-block radius surrounding Lincoln Center.
