Extended Partnership to Include Establishment of Gatorade Sports Science Institute on IMG Academies’ Campus

Today IMG Academies, the Bradenton, Fla.-based multi-sport training and education complex, and sports nutrition giant Gatorade, announced an extension of their current relationship deeming Gatorade the ‘Official Sports Performance Nutrition Sponsor’ of all current and future IMG Academies’ facilities, IMG Academies-owned performance and training events, as well as the Combine360 measurement index and training program. As part of the new agreement, Gatorade has unveiled a permanent Gatorade Sports Science Institute on the IMG Academies campus. The facility, which opened in late July 2011, is only the second of its kind in the world.

“Gatorade has served our athletes well for many years, and we are excited to work with them in this new capacity,” said Sam Zussman, Managing Director, IMG Academies. “The combination of our 360-degree TOTAL ATHLETE™ approach to training and Gatorade’s unmatched leadership in hydration and nutrition will result in new insights and innovations that will help us achieve our shared goal of helping athletes maximize their potential.”

For more than six years, IMG-trained athletes have benefited from the cutting-edge hydration and nutrition products provided by Gatorade. With the installation of the newest Gatorade Sports Science Institute on the IMG campus, Gatorade will bring its 40-year history of nutrition and hydration scientific research out of the lab and onto the training surface.

“The opening of the GSSI Performance Laboratory at IMG Academies offers us an opportunity to make GSSI science more readily accessible to a wider breadth of athletes in more sports, across varying skill levels,” said Asker Jeukendrup, global senior director of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute and professor of exercise metabolism and director of the human performance lab at University of Birmingham in England.  “As the GSSI footprint grows, so does our ability to study more athletes, gain additional insights into what helps them perform better and help them understand how and why sports nutrition is a proven vital component for their training.” 

IMG Academies, home to nearly 800 full-time student-athletes, provides a controlled research environment primed for Gatorade research. Broader opportunities for research exist via IMG’s year-round multi-sport camp program and professional sport offerings, as well as its extensive training and performance assets that extend beyond the 400-acre campus.

As the Official Sports Performance Nutrition Sponsor, Gatorade will continue working with IMG nutritionists and performance specialists to develop hydration and nutrition education programs for full-time students and camp participants year-round.

Combine360, the IMG Academies-developed global measurement system for improved performance, will also benefit from the new relationship.
